How to Write Compare and Contrast Essay

Writing compare and contrast essays might be chicken feed to some but gruesome to many others. Others find it easy because they have the right idea on what they are doing, while the rest go bonkers because they lack organization of their thoughts.

First, we must establish the definition of compare and contrast essays. Compare and contrast essays have obviously two tasks, and these are to compare and to contrast. Meaning, the essay will be telling both about the similarities and differences of the things being compared, and in the conclusion tell which is which. So definitely, every aspect of the things being compared will be considered.

Block Arrangement or Point by Point Analysis

To make it a lot easier, it is very helpful to write down an outline of the entire essay. This is to serve as your guideline while writing compare and contrast essay, so as not to let you stray away from the topic. But before you can draw an outline, you must first decide on how you will organize your ideas.

You can use a (1)block arrangement, where you will discuss each topic in separate paragraphs; (2)point by point analysis, where you discuss the similarities and differences of the things being compared in every paragraph; or (3)you can discuss all the similarities first, then all the differences. Whichever is most convenient to you, you shall use.

Let us say you are comparing House A and House B. In the first type of arrangement, you will discuss everything about House A in the first paragraph; may it be its area, style, number of rooms, and interior design. In the next paragraph, you will discuss House B, but the topics should be the same with what you discussed with House A which is the area, style, number of rooms, and interior design.

In the second type of arrangement, you will discuss both House A and B according to the aspects being compared. Say in the first paragraph, you will discuss both the similarities and differences in the areas of House A and B, in the second paragraph their style, and so on until every aspect is being accounted for.

In the third type of arrangement, you will discuss all the similarities of House A and B in the first paragraph. In the next paragraph, all their differences must be analyzed. The comparison should be fair and not biased and absolutely based on facts and not merely the opinions of the author. The conclusion should discuss the highlights of the comparison, and restate firmly the thesis statement stated in the introduction. This goes with all the types of arrangement.
