Essay on Reasons why Students in College use Drugs
Illegal drug is an issue in almost all university and college campus in the United States. The students who were caught in the University of Columbia is just the tip of the iceberg in this problem. Students in different universities and college know that drugs are available inside the campus. In fact, the Columbia University is reputed to be a haven for casual drug sales (Joshua Robinson & Lloyd Grove, 2010, p.1). These drugs can be bought from dealers who usually visit their neighborhoods near the university or through the students who assumed the risk by making illegal drugs available to the students. This has been going on for years. In fact, the problem of drug dealing inside schools is not confined to colleges and universities. It extends to high schools. According to David S. Morgan (2007), “the percentage of teens who say they attend high schools with drug problems has increased from 44 percent to 61 percent since 2002, and the percentage in middle schools has increased from 19 percent to 31 percent.”
For many of these students who occasionally use drugs, use of these is simply their way to cope with college. Joshua Robinson and Lloyd Grove (2010) citing a knowledgeable alumnus of Columbia University estimated that 30% of the student population in the said schools are involved as buyers. Most of these students are engaged simply because they want to prepare for the finals.
These students know that college is the most memorable years of their life. But they also realize that college can be very demanding and stressful. Many of these students have to properly balance their paper works and exams and their social life. For some students college is the first time that they are away from their home. There are no parents or older brothers and sisters who will monitor their behavior. The feeling of being independent from the controls of the parents can be liberating but it can also be overpowering for students. While some students can easily adjust to the peer pressures around them, some cannot. In these situations, students may think that they can only find comfort and solace in drugs. However, the pressures at school do not justify the use of illegal drugs. Incapacity to pay tuition fees is also not an excuse.
Considering the extent of the problem of drug use and drug dealing on campus, it is time for school authorities to respond to the problem. Schools cannot continue to deny that their students are not taking drugs sine doing so will only make the situation worse for these students (Rob Parsons, 2010, p.1). Schools cannot argue that what the students do on their personal time is beyond the school’s concern. The fact is that schools have the responsibility to protect their students when they are under their supervision. Their main job is to promote the safety and well-being of their students. Considering this duty allowing drugs to proliferate while they are in schools is a failure on their part.
