So you enjoy those little puffs; the ring of white smoke that comes out when you exhale through pursed lips, the great floating sensation each time you make a sip and, most of all, the acceptance of your rock and roll peers. Yes, all these sounds amazing – making you feel a part of that society you desperately want to penetrate. If you don’t smoke, you’re not “in”. So you divulge yourself, huffing at every stick that you can hold every possible minute until you find yourself hooked up and it becomes a nasty habit. Just when you think everything’s going right, what you don’t know will kill you – softly.
HARMFUL EFFECTS OF NICOTINE ON HEALTH
While you are enjoying every minute of it, you are not aware that every stick of a cigarette you light lessens your life expectancy; meaning, the more you smoke, the shorter your life gets. Though you don’t know or notice it, the pleasures that you get from every sip means a collateral damage to your health. And why is this?
A single cigarette stick contains more than 4000 of harmful chemicals, each having toxic effects to your body. And that number does not even include the overwhelming amount of carcinogens – biochemical agents that causes cancer cells. The most dangerous of these chemicals are nicotine (a major component), lead, cyanide, carbon monoxide and many others, which primarily cause disruptions in the proper functioning of the lungs and cause deficiencies to the rest of the respiratory system. Smoking is also much accounted for coronary artery diseases or those affecting the large and major arteries in the body, and cardiovascular issues of the heart. This is because nicotine and carbon monoxide when inhaled, are absorbed into the bloodstream which run through all the body’s blood vessels. These chemicals cause atherosclerosis, the narrowing of the arteries thus impeding blood flow. This will then lead to lesser oxygen supply to the different cells in our body (blood carries oxygen), hypertension or high blood pressure, and ultimately when unattended, heart attack and stroke. Chronic smoking also results to serious oral health problems.
What is enumerated above are just some of the dangers smoking brings with its pleasure. So if you’re not so eager to have these diseases yet, you better stop that unhealthy habit. Or if you are not a smoker, shake off that urge to try. Smoking is addictive, you might not be able to stop it.
